Auburn Group Inspiring Future Careers: Sandon School Students Experience Life on a Live Construction Site

Luke Miles (Assistant Site Manager) hosted and sharing his knowledge, giving the students a real insight into the construction side of the development of our projects.

At Auburn Group, we are passionate about inspiring the next generation of construction professionals and helping young people understand the exciting opportunities available within our industry.

Recently, we welcomed Year 9 and Year 10 students from The Sandon School Academy Trust in Chelmsford to our Southend Theatres project for an educational site visit designed to provide real-world insight into construction and the diverse careers it offers.

Bringing Construction to Life

For many students, construction is often associated solely with building work on site. However, the industry encompasses a wide range of specialist roles, from project management and quantity surveying to design, engineering, planning and health and safety.

The site visit gave students the opportunity to experience a live construction environment firsthand, helping them gain a deeper understanding of how projects are delivered and the collaborative effort required to bring them to completion.

Our Site Manager, Luke Miles, hosted the visit and shared his extensive knowledge and experience with the students. Through discussions and a guided tour of the project, Luke provided valuable insight into the day-to-day realities of construction management and the many career pathways available within the sector.

Supporting the Building a Lasting Legacy Initiative

The visit formed part of the wider Building a Lasting Legacy initiative led by Essex Growth Agency, a programme dedicated to creating meaningful social value through education, skills development and industry engagement.

The initiative aims to connect young people with employers and industry professionals, helping them explore future career opportunities while developing a greater understanding of the industries shaping their local communities.

By providing opportunities such as site visits, the programme helps bridge the gap between education and employment, giving students valuable exposure to real working environments and inspiring future career aspirations.

Working Together to Create Social Value

At Auburn Group, we recognise the importance of working collaboratively to create lasting positive impact within our communities. We are proud to have supported this initiative alongside partners who share our commitment to developing future talent.

We would like to thank Kirstie Forrester at Essex County Council and Helen Clements at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure for their continued efforts in driving programmes like this forward and creating opportunities for young people across Essex.

Investing in the Future

Engaging with students at an early stage is vital in helping them understand the breadth of opportunities available within the construction industry. By opening our sites and sharing our expertise, we hope to inspire the next generation to consider careers that are innovative, rewarding and essential to the future of our built environment.

We were delighted to welcome the students from The Sandon School Academy Trust and look forward to continuing our involvement in initiatives that support education, skills development and social value across the communities where we work.

The future of construction depends on the talent we inspire today, and it is encouraging to see so many young people eager to learn more about the industry.
